Here’s a reminder of how small its sales numbers are: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
The seventh-gen Legacy is based on the brand’s global modular architecture shared with the Ascent, Forester and Impreza, which promises to improve handling and comfort, while also offering support for a possible future electrified version. Potential engine candidates for powering the new Legacy are the Forester’s 2.5-liter for the base model, while the current car’s naturally-aspirated flat-six could be replaced by the Ascent’s 2.4-liter turbocharged four, mated to a CVT and standard all-wheel drive.- 260HP @ 5600, 277 Lb/ft@ 2000 OK NOW we’re talking. Still CVT, but still.
2019 Dodge Ram anyone? Anyone?
Volvo all the things!
I don’t expect any bigly yuge changes on the outside

I’m still mad at them for not offering the Levorg here.

The 2.4 L turbo from the Ascent and a proper manual would make a nice new Leggy GT.

Oh don’t get me started.

It’ll never come. This is the best we will get.

tablet all the dashes!
boo.
The best part of Subaru’s HVAC was that is stuck to the proper 3 knob.

Don’t care
, AWD turbo Mazda 3 FTW.

I know, but a boy can dream?

Is it weird that I read this as 2020 Outback?
Probably not...

Add this to your dreams- Mazda Speed 6 with the 2.5 Turbo, AWD and Manual

The O utback will have the same changes inside guaranteed.

In the year
202x. I’d still rather have an NA
2.5L AWD mazda 3 than a legacy. Legacy will be a bit bigger but not much.
![]() 01/31/2019 at 11:28 |

First the Mazda 6 and now you lay this crap on me ?!
It’s a shame I can’t get over how awful the CVT feels.

Oh, I know - I was wondering why you were thinking they would discontinue it, then realized that oh, yeah, the Legacy is a car that exists.
![]() 01/31/2019 at 11:29 |

The Legacy still does reasonably well for Subaru and being a Outback sedan it isn’t a massive commitment for them to keep it around compared to a more unique platform.
That center console disgusts me but at least it looks like they still have tactile controls for key radio and HVAC functions.
It looks like they are trying to push it further up market, likely targeting Volvo and co. The last 2 gens of Legacy have existed in this odd area where they felt like they wanted to be nicer but we’re pulled down to meet a cost (my family has owned examples of the last 4 generations of Legacy/Outback and our current 17 Outback feels nicer than our old 2010 Legacy 3.6r which was a step up from our 2001, the 05 has to be ignored because it was a loaded 2.5GT with all the features while the other 3 have been on the lower end of their trim levels) . A nicer Legacy with the 3.6 or 2.4 turbo at a $30-35k price point to undercut the likes of the 3 series would probably do well for Subaru, especially if coupled with some higher end trims of the Impreza at around $25k.

It’s a safe sensible family car not a WRX, the CVT ruins that car for sure . One should lower their expectations for midsize sedans, or buy the Honda Accord 2.0T sport with the manual.
![]() 01/31/2019 at 11:35 |
|
Yep, I still think of the Outback as a Legacy, so I was briefly confused.
![]() 01/31/2019 at 11:35 |
|
The 2.4T would make a nice upgrade to the old 3.6 but I don’t think we will be getting the manual back. They need to put the 3.6 to bed at some point and now is probably the time to do it.

I mean, they were already pretty low... but they need a GT version if they’re going to start spouting off about a turbo.
![]() 01/31/2019 at 11:42 |

It sure would!
![]() 01/31/2019 at 11:49 |

In a way, it’s fitting.
T he legacy began, excuse the pun, around 30 years ago from today.

CVTs are why I am pretty much ready to give up on ICEs. Give me torquie EVs or give me death !

And it peaked with this. It’s all downhill from there

I have watched a few Ascent reviews and with the 2.4 Turbo, they say it’s better than other CVTs mated with this engine . Of course I have to drive one myself to confirm but it could be tolerable at best.

I’m surprised but glad to see it happening.
Although I’d probably go with the Outback, the Legacy fills a nice niche and I see a good bit of them around my area.
I’m really hoping for the turbo 4. My father just got a new Accord and really wanted to like the Legacy, but the outdated powertrains were its downfall.
![]() 01/31/2019 at 12:04 |
|
To be clear it’s all the auto sites that are saying 2.4 Turbo. Given Subaru’s bad track record of not updating powertrains, I wouldn’t be surprised if they pull the rug under from us and keep the 2.5 and 3.6.
We’ll know in a week for sure.

I don't like how the shifter covers the bottom of the touchscreen.
![]() 01/31/2019 at 12:08 |
|
It won’t when you pull it back into drive because and you won’t be messing around a lot with that bottom area when you are in P,R N anywa y -that is the manufacturers’ logic at least from what I’ve read . Wait for videos and pics from the actual reveal to see how it is from a driver’s seat position perspective .

I drove a 2014 or 15 Forester XT, and it was just so disappointing, but I guess that was a 2.0T. I could just not get it to respond the way I wanted it to.
![]() 01/31/2019 at 12:13 |

Manufacturer recommends only using touchscreen while driving. :( Sounds ‘ bout right.

A week or so ago a Legacy current style Legacy pulled up behind me at a light. It was dark out and a t first I thought the LED accent lights in the headlamps were the new Forester, but then I was like, “what what’s this, a Subaru that’s a sedan???”
Back in Madison there were a halfway decent number of Legacy and Impreza sedans rolling around, although the Outback, Impreza hatch and Crosstrek were definitely more popular. B ut I genuinely believe since moving to DC last April this is the first modern Subaru sedan I’ve noticed. Even non-Crosstrek Impreza hatchbacks seem to be rare around here.

Wow,
I was guessing the sales number would be closer to 60,000, still below Hyundai - Kia but above VW.

Fudgin’ finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wait, you were eagerly waiting for a new Legacy? It ain’t no Legacy GT Spec. B you know...
![]() 01/31/2019 at 13:17 |
|
Yep, that’s a fair assessment alright.
I’ll quickly share my thoughts on the Legacy too, you got me thinking.
1st gen: an incredible milestone for Subaru, even if age makes it impractical today . Performance versions were on par with Sierra Cosworths!
2nd gen: perhaps a little cheapened, but as a trade-off, far more advanced and sustainable in the present day. Definitely a good replacement .
3rd and 4th gen: if we’re being realistic , this was the peak . Th e flat-6 option was a fantastic idea. Porsche and STI-tuned versions helped too .
5th and onwards: CVTs hurt them too much. Personally , I never got round to liking the styling either . I’m sure these are competent, but that’s it.
![]() 01/31/2019 at 13:22 |
|
I’ve owned several and they’ve always been awesome, reliable, and astonishingly cheap . The turbo 2.4 sounds like it’ll be the tits.
![]() 01/31/2019 at 13:34 |

Yup or just keep the weaksauce N/A motor like they did with the Forester redesign.
![]() 01/31/2019 at 13:37 |

It’s very Subaru which is to say that the new car looks exactly like the old one and any and all changes are exactly as predicted. Who buys these again?
![]() 01/31/2019 at 14:09 |
|
No I’m just happy Subaru did something about them dated interiors.
Hopefully, these are installed in all future Subarus.
![]() 01/31/2019 at 21:29 |

Maybe, just maybe Subaru will want to get on that growing wagon market and try and undercut Volvo. One can hope.

You just compared two cars in completely different classes, one of which doesn’t exist...
